Doctor Akunjee was my GP in the early 90’s in Turnpike Lane and I have memories of a compassionate and caring doctor. I also remember his lovely wife. May Allah give her sabra and keep Doctor Akunjee in his vast paradise 🤲🤲🤲

Truly, he was a modest, respectful and committed man. He was a laconic man with profound intellect. He was passionate about his work. He used to make time to really listen to his patients and educate them. He was compassionate and sacrificed much. I recall calling the surgery once and he had already packed up to leave, but he agreed to wait for us. He was humble and a great role model for all. I went to secondary school with Muhammed. He was the year below me but I got to know both him and his older brother who was in my year. I remember Muhammed had a reputation for being one of smartest and cleverest in his year. It is evident from all the testimonies on here that he maintained that exceptionalism into adulthood and into his profession as a Doctor. I was moved and deeply saddened by this news. I had the privilege of getting to know Dr Muhammed from the period 2010 to 2014. I'm very grateful for the effort and dedication he put into resolving the health issues I was experiencing during that time. His expert advice and feedback encouraged me to take drastic action with my health when things seemed to be going downhill, especially after just starting university. He genuinely cared about his patients and was always looking for ways to improve patient experience and develop the surgery. It was always a pleasure to see him. I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr Muhammed's passing at such a young age. He was my GP trainer after I returned from maternity leave in 2020. I feel privileged I knew him and worked with him for over a year. During my maternity leave I read one of his books recommended by colleagues as a 'must read' for CSA. When I realised the author of the book was going to be my trainer I felt very lucky. When I met him for the first time I was pleased to see how approachable and humble he was despite his many achievements. Whenever I felt challenged in a consultation he was always available for support and patients always happily accepted his advice. He had an incredible trusted relationship with his patients, something that so many of us aspire to achieve. He went above and beyond the call of duty to help me pass my final GP exam but my learning from him goes beyond passing the exam as he tought me real life skills to help me thrive as a GP. One of the shining lights of Primary Care has been taken far too soon. I have had the honour and privilege of working with the Akunjee family for many many years as a fellow East Haringey GP. Muhammed was a quite spoken gentleman who one had to listen to. When he applied to be a GP appraiser it was one of the easiest appointments I ever made. He was dedicated to his patients, his family and to education of all. My friend you will be sorely missed.

I just want to say I’ve know him since I was very little. He was so kind and caring to my family, we have a lot of love for him. My earliest memory was me having chicken pox at 4/5 and he gave me a lolly pop for being so brave. Throughout about 15 years of me visiting him, he was always patient and listened to us as a family. He has helped my family in ways I can’t explain, it’s so difficult to put words together on how great he was and the impact he had. My family was shocked when we heard his departure, may Allah bless him with the highest rank in jannah. Thank you for everything.

It was with real shock and sadness to hear about the passing of Muhammed. He was an amazing GP, who's influence and hard work in Haringey will be missed by everyone, GPs and patients alike. Though I knew Muhammed from medical school, I got to know him better when I started working at WGS as a newly qualified GP. The clinics were busy and hard work but the main thing that kept me coming back to WGS for five years was the ability to have a chit chat with Muhammed and his brother at lunch! How I miss those smoked salmon sandwiches and chocolate donuts. But, more importantly, i got a lot of wisdom and good advice from the brothers. Muhammed was a man of few words but his advice was good because it came filled with sincerity and knowledge masha Allah. He was always willing to help others, be it patients, colleagues or people in the community even though that may have caused him some difficulty. Though he only lived to his 40s, we can see he touched and helped many people judging by the comments here. And I am sure there are many good deeds that are only known to Allah and that we hope he will be rewarded for without limit. "And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when faced with a disaster, say, “Surely to Allah we belong and to Him we will ˹all˺ return. They are the ones who will receive Allah’s blessings and mercy. And it is they who are ˹rightly˺ guided." (2:155 - 157)

It was so sad that Muhammad should leave us at such a young age.I met him before he qualified when his father Dr Akunjee brought him into our Pharmacy in West green road . We moved to Our Philip lane Pharmacy and met him again when he was training at the Lawrence house surgery, and shook hands with him in our pharmacy after he fully qualified. I went to the same medical school but never had the pleasure of meeting Dr Akunjee. We heard and knew of his family, who are pillars in the community. His books were mandatory reading if you wanted to do well on final then GP exams. There were lots of resources out there, but so many of us preferred his books because they were concise, thorough and no-nonsense….which is what we needed weeks before any exam. I pray that all of us who passed because of you, may every life we help and save be a sadaqah jariyah for you. You were the best of us. The cream of us.

I knew Muhammad when he was a trainee GP with us. He was adored by all patients, already so wise beyond his years, calm and thoughtful. I remember the joy he shared at the birth of his first child, feeding all the staffat Lawrence House Surgery a delicious curry. I often share the OSCE guide he wrote with his brother to my medical students. I am so saddened to hear about his sudden passing and send all my love and thoughts to his family. He was an amazing GP, colleague and I am sure a brilliant father, husband, son and brother.

Dr MM where do we start! He was a gifted man not only as a Dr but just as a human being, he was caring, kind, and always willing to help at any time gone way too soon, there was never a time where he wouldn't ask if everything was ok with ourselves or the surgery working with him everyday just felt so easy there was an understanding without having to explain anything to him in much detail. There are way too many good memories with him but we can both say and remember is when given a new responsibilities we were unsure that we was capable but he believed in us more than what we did he expressed that we were the correct people to do it and that we knew how to deal with it so don't worry (those were his words) they are way too many memories but working with him was a pleasure and an honor, learnt and taught us a lot just wished we had more time with him. Dr M was a friend, guide and a mentor. A man whom everyone trusted to always speak sense. Whenever I would have challenges, I would message him and he would efficiently reply with sound advice. I was fortunate to have worked with him in the CCG and PCNs but I was lucky enough to go beyond that layer and learn that this was a truly remarkable man. I remember the last time we went out for dinner. His personality kept me speaking to him for 4/5 hours; usually I focus on the food, but he had me captivated, engaged deep in thought and discussion. He had many layers to him. There was medicine/ religion/humanitarianism/ humbleness and also having the lens of having privileged schooling but also being bought up and engaged in the most deprived part of london with one of the lowest life expectancies. It gave him a true balanced view to life and I was honoured to have him as a friend and colleague. He leaves a big hole for myself and many others and I can’t quite put in words how grateful I am to him and Naz. May this true gentleman be rewarded with the highest levels in heaven.

Dr Muhammed (rah) was a quiet, witty, clever, generous and exceptional man who cared a lot for others. I was privileged and honoured to have him as a friend, mentor, older brother figure and a business partner. He was always courteous and respectful. He provided calm and consistent leadership. He was wise and visionary. Even prior to becoming his partner, I found out like many others I could count on Dr Muhammed whenever I was challenged and needed to talk to someone. Despite being extremely busy he would pause and clear his schedule to be with you, in your time of need. I will never forget him offering to meet me in a cafe close to my home when it was I who needed his advise on one occasion. What I also found remarkable is that Dr Muhammed was so relatable to everyone from every background and from all walks of life. He was highly decorated academically and professionally, but yet maintained a humbleness and personal touch that is rarely seen. It reminded me of the story of the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) when a bedouin forcibly grabbed his clothes demanding various things from him to the extent that it left a mark on his skin. Despite being in a position of power and authority the Prophet simply smiled and requested that the bedouin be given all that he asked for. Gentleness was also a characteristic that Dr Muhammed reflected. May God bless his soul! Missing you lots.

Dr Muhammad was the best GP I ever had. He was so caring , supportive and understanding. I never forget the time he heard mum was Ill and just turned up at our home to check that everything was ok and what he could do to help. He phoned many times without us having an appointment always going out of his way. He was a very special person, and GP , more like a friend and we will never forget his kindness. I worked closely with Dr Muhammed in the CCG. I was always inspired by working with Muhammed and Naz. When the three of us met, I never knew who was the most intelligent person in the room, but I did know it wasn't me. I shared with them a deep affiliation for the area. Muhammed and I talked about the similarities between our values, perspectives and faith. My approach to primary care commissioning was i) to ensure one or both of them was in any strategic meeting and ii) to support their practice to flourish. Their practice won multiple innovation awards and is the only practice in North Central London to have an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission. They helped to change expectations across the area and we even set up a budget to roll their innovations out across Haringey. The NHS has paid for a new health centre for their practice which will open next month. It breaks my heart that Muhammed will not work from it but it will be a memorial to him. Muhammed and I worked closely on the covid vaccination campaign. He stood out as an outstanding community leader as well as a doctor. We had to work particularly hard to meet with one of the mosques. In a meeting, the members asked questions while the leader sat silently. At the end of the meeting he said "We know Dr Muhammed. If Dr Muhammed says take the vaccine I will take the vaccine." At the end of a meeting with the Assunnah Islamic centre, a largely Somali mosque, I encouraged Muhammed to speak from his faith. He cited a section of the Koran which talks about a boat and how we are all connected to each other. The mosque hosted a vaccination session and a homeless man came in for his vaccination. The mosque then became a vaccination centre for a pharmacy with thousands of people vaccinated. This was what Muhammed was about for me. He was the navigator of the boat. By reaching out to people who were at danger of being excluded, we brought them into the boat and then this became a means to bring others into the boat. Dr Mahmood told me that this record is for Muhammed's daughters, so they know what sort of man he was. He was a great man. It was a privilege to call him my friend. Owen Sloman

Two of my children needed to study hard for their final year medical exams and came across the revision guides that Dr. Muhammad Akunjee wrote. The book really helped my eldest daughter as I couldn't give her any guidance or support in that subject since medicine was outside of my skill set. She studied hard referring often to the notes and now she is a successful doctor training as a GP and with an interest in obs/gyne. My third daughter has also benefitted from the knowledge that Dr Muhammad has passed down to them as she is studying for her finals this year. I am so grateful for Dr. Muhammad taking the time and effort to write down his experiences in studying medicine and give to the next generation valuable help and advice so they can carry on doing wonderful work as he taught them. My daughters and I will be eternally grateful, their success in part due to his teachings and his knowledge which will no doubt be put in to practice to save many lives. The first time I started working at WGS a few years ago, I remember Dr Muhammed handing a copy of one the books he had written as an introductory gift. I recall looking at the office shelf with the various certificates and trophies on display thinking to myself “wow - he must be so accomplished”..:. After working with Dr Muhammed over the years, yes he was indeed accomplished - but was so much more. He was bright, caring, kind, and most of all, he wanted do right and strive for the best for his patients and the wider world. Our desks are in the same room and I would overhear how Dr Muhammed would interact with patients - they trusted him, they were reassured by him, they felt cared for by him. I’ll be forever saddened that I will be unable glance over my shoulder to know you are reassuringly there. It was an honour to work with you - I feel blessed to have known you Dr Muhammed. You will be truly missed and your legacy will be in our hearts forever and never forgotten.

I have known of Dr Muhammed as a child through my father who used to speak highly of him, his deen and commitment for making knowledge accessible. The news of his passing brought much sadness to me. My condolences to the family, it is a tragic loss for everyone who was blessed to know him. I have nothing but warm words to say about how welcoming he was to me in the practice. I have learnt a lot during my time with him at West Green. The one thing I remember the most is that as I have a bit of a drive to get to work I often arrive early and we would often have a 5 min chat before I start my clinic talking about everything, from the football to surprisingly a lot about food and often share a laugh - which is often nice before a long day. I could keep writing pages and pages of different stories that happened during my time, but what I want to express which is so difficult under the circumstances is that above all Muhammed was a humble and compassionate person, which is very unique in the world we live in and it should truly be cherished. I was dr M’s and dr Naz’s first trainee to qualify, together they have taught me everything I know and gave me my first gp job at West Green surgery. Dr M you are so so missed. You were always so patient with me when I was learning. I will never forget how much you and dr naz were laughing when I nearly sent home the patient with low oxygen! Thankfully you taught me not to do that, and taught me so much more like the magic of belladonna plasters! I am still in shock after receiving this awful news on Dr Muhammed Akunjee's death my heart has been broken into so many pieces.. I have worked with Dr Muhammed Akunjee for many many years at the Gp practice, I can not believe a soul like him has gone. There was a patient who was being verbally abusive towards me, as much as i tried to calm the patient down and get him to stop shouting at me he carried on calling me every name under the sun. All of a sudden, out of nowhere Dr Muhammed came down and stood face to face with this patient ( Bare in mind, We would very rarely see Dr MM outside his office. He was glued to that chair, working away on the PC) So when i saw DR Muhammed confronting this patient i was hit with a wave of emotions. I couldn’t believe Dr MM came down to stand up for me! I was so grateful and truly touched by this gesture that i stared crying. After he sent the patient away, he took me to the kitchen, got me a glass of water and made sure i was ok. And like nothing just happened, he went back into his office, made himself comfortable in the desk chair and carried on working till the end of the day. To this day i tell my friends, family and new colleagues of the time my boss stood up for me, and i will cherish this memory till the end of time. He had such a kind spirit and was honestly a great person. He will truly be missed. My sincerest condolences to the Akunjee family, wishing you all peace, courage and love at this time of sorrow. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in the service Dr Muhammed led in Tottenham and will always be in admiration of his hard work, leadership achievements improving healthcare in Haringey and his contribution to the medical field through education. He will be greatly missed by so many and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I have known Tanweer since I first met the family in my early teens and he has since been a close friend and big brother figure to me, which I may never have again. I travelled with him, performed hajj togother, attended countless classes and lectures with him and many many more deeds. Most of all our relationship was sewn around so many ayaat and ahadith from the Quran and Sunnah we studied together and discussed. I pray Allah grants my brother the most dignified entrance into jannah while their gates are flung open wide this blessed month. May he be united with the best of creation, the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, the upright and also permit us to be with him too. We love you Tanweer and you will be missed with every ayaat we read.

I want to record how grateful I am that I met and got to know Muhammed.He enriched my life and career as a Haringey GP. I knew I could always turn to him for wise counsel and advice in our time in commissioning.I never heard him say anything in a meeting which wasn't thoughtful, sensitive and deeply considered.Haringey medical community has lost an outstanding member and example of what it means to be a GP.

Truly shocked with the passing of Dr Muhammed. Alhamdulilah he was such a good doctor and a good person. May Allah be pleased with him, grant him the highest of Jannah and reunite him with his loved ones in barzakh. May Allah send His love, blessings and patience to his parents, siblings, wife and children, Ameen.

One of the most helpful and caring brothers. I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He was a pillar of support for the local community in Tottenham and was always available to lend a helping hand. May Allah grant him the highest level of Jannah.

Dr Muhammed was an excellent GP. He was my family GP treating my children, wife and my parents. He was always very helpful and went beyond the call of duty. In 2020, my mum was diagnosed with cancer. Dr Muhammed made sure that she had all the help she needed. He was also a very pious man and a great supporter of Masjid Ayesha Tottenham. We will forever miss him at the masjid.

I’ve just heard the tragic news about Muhammed and I wanted to pass on my thoughts and condolences to your family. I was lucky enough to have Muhammed as the GP representative on one of my committees when Haringey CCG was set up. He supported us for many years. He was always so calm, so considered and so clever! He was a pleasure to be around and I valued his input into our work so much - and he never made me feel like what I was doing was unimportant, even though to a busy GP I’m sure he had much more important things to be thinking about. He will be very missed by many people in Haringey.
